At Crystal Lily Creative, we often work with people who are detail oriented, deeply empathetic and sometimes they identify as recovering people pleasers. This influences my collaborative approach to photography, because I find the magic is in our connection. When this Los Angeles based therapist (we’ll call her “C” to respect privacy) reached out to schedule a brand photography session I was excited about working with her, because I love working with therapists. C welcomed the detail oriented process as I sought to understand her, what she cares about, how she wants people to feel, and why it’s important for her to portray being approachable, inviting, relatable, real, positive, and warm.
C believes in the power of empathy, understanding, and creating a safe space for individuals to explore their innermost thoughts and emotions. Her approach is deeply rooted in client-centered therapy as she truly believes everyone has amazing potential. It’s C passion to help people uncover roadblocks and work toward developing self-compassion and self-acceptance. Her mission is to help children & adolescents recognize their strengths and embrace their authenticity and develop the tools they need to succeed and thrive in their futures.
C took advantage of the Aligned Values workbook in the weeks leading up to her photoshoot to clarify her values and articulate her reasons for becoming a therapist. Having a deeper understanding of her why helped C recognize the benefits of investing in brand photography to give potential clients a sense of the presence she brings. Since C works with youth, it was important to have a mix of relatable, yet professional images that appeal to parents and teens. We used Pinterest to put together a collaborative mood board to bring inspiration to C photo session.
As is common for first-time brand photo clients, C shared that she felt nervous about being in front of the camera. This is why I draw on my experience as a certified yoga teacher and trauma-informed space holder to start every brand photo session with a grounding meditation and intentional breathing. By doing this, we get you out of your head and into your body so we can work together from a grounded place.
Once C was grounded, we turned on her playlist and got to work. Together, we created images and a brand video that reflects how C shows up in her practice alongside some silliness to appeal to the youth she enjoys working with.
